{"id":922,"date":"2008-02-11T11:04:20","date_gmt":"2008-02-11T19:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=922"},"modified":"2008-02-11T11:07:14","modified_gmt":"2008-02-11T19:07:14","slug":"heavyweights-giants-bigwigs-and-snugglers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=922","title":{"rendered":"Heavyweights, Giants, Bigwigs and Snugglers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week&#39;s announcement about the OpenID Foundation, and news of participation\u00a0by a number of large industry players has echoed far and wide.\u00a0\u00a0In fact,\u00a0Bill Gates announced Microsoft&#39;s\u00a0decision to collaborate with the\u00a0OpenID community <em>almost a year ago<\/em> at RSA (See the <a href=\"\/?p=668\">CardSpace \/ OpenID Collaboration Announcement<\/a> and a lot of Blogosphere discussion or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?s=OpenID&amp;paged=3\">postings like these<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0identityblog.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the announcement\u00a0many of us have been involved in sorting out the intellectual property issues which plagued the community.\u00a0 We&#39;ve come through that, and arrived at a point when we can begin to look at how the technology might be integrated into various services and user experiences.\u00a0 We&#39;ve also made progress on looking at how the phishing vulnerabilities of OpenID can be addressed through Information Cards and other technologies.<\/p>\n<p>My view is simple.\u00a0 OpenID is not a panacea.\u00a0 Its unique power stems from the way it leverages DNS &#8211; but this same framework sets limits on its potential uses.\u00a0\u00a0Above all,\u00a0it is an important addition to the spectrum of technologies we call the Identity Metasystem, since it facilitates\u00a0integration of the &#8220;long tail&#8221;
