{"id":910,"date":"2007-11-29T13:32:48","date_gmt":"2007-11-29T21:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=910"},"modified":"2007-11-29T13:37:47","modified_gmt":"2007-11-29T21:37:47","slug":"cardspace-for-the-rest-of-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=910","title":{"rendered":"CardSpace for the rest of us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"snap_preview\">I&#39;ve\u00a0been a Jon Udell fan for\u00a0so long that I\u00a0can&#39;t even\u00a0admit to myself\u00a0just how long it is!\u00a0 So I&#39;ll avoid that calculation and just say I&#39;m really delighted to see\u00a0the CardSpace\u00a0team get\u00a0kudos\u00a0for\u00a0its\u00a0long-tail (no-ssl) work in Jon&#39;s recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonudell.net\/2007\/11\/29\/cardspace-for-the-rest-of-us\/\">CardSpace for the rest of us<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"snap_preview\"><p>Hat tip to the CardSpace team for <a modo=\"false\" href=\"\/?p=894\"><font color=\"#b54141\">enabling \u201clong tail\u201d use<\/font><\/a> of Information Card technology by lots of folks who are (understandably) daunted by the prospect of installing SSL certificates onto web servers. Kim Cameron\u2019s <a href=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2007\/10\/nohttps\/nohttps.html\" class=\"broken_link\"><font color=\"#b54141\">screencast<\/font><\/a> walks through the scenario in PHP, but anyone who can parse a bit of XML in any language will be able to follow along. The demo shows how to create a simple http: (not https:) web page that invokes an identity selector, and then parses out and reports the attributes sent by the client.<\/p>\n<p>As Kim points out this is advisable only in low-value scenarios where an unencrypted exchange may be deemed acceptable. But when you count blogs, and other kinds of lightweight or ad-hoc services, there are a lot of those scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Kim adds the following key point:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Students and others who want to see the basic ideas of the Metasystem can therefore get into the game more easily, and upgrade to certificates once they\u2019ve mastered the basics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Exactly. Understanding the logistics of SSL is unrelated to understanding how identity claims can be represented and exchanged.
