{"id":888,"date":"2007-10-27T12:29:54","date_gmt":"2007-10-27T20:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=888"},"modified":"2008-03-05T21:17:15","modified_gmt":"2008-03-06T05:17:15","slug":"that-elusive-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=888","title":{"rendered":"That elusive privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Craig Burton <a href=\"http:\/\/cb.pamelaproject.com\/?p=151\">amused me recently<\/a> by demonstrating conclusively that my use of\u00a0a <a href=\"\/?p=851\">digital birthday<\/a>\u00a0for non-disclosure reasons couldn&#39;t survive social networking for longer than five digital minutes!\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/cb.pamelaproject.com\/?p=151\">Here&#39;s\u00a0what<\/a> he says about it\u00a0in his new wordpress blog (and he&#39;s setting up infocard login as we speak)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eternaloptimist.wordpress.com\/\"><font color=\"#546188\">Pamela Dingle<\/font><\/a> pointed this post out to me early in Sept. We both decided not to write about it and make fun of Kim and Jackson for violating privacy guidelines so blatantly. But Kim got a good laugh out of my pointing that out so \u00e2\u20ac\u201c while late \u00e2\u20ac\u201c here it is. Pictures, dates the whole thing. Who cares about privacy anyway eh?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/jackson.shaw\/KimSBirthdayParty\" class=\"broken_link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/jackson.shaw\/KimSBirthdayParty\" class=\"broken_link\"><font color=\"#546188\">Kim\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Birthday Party<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\">August 31st was Kim Cameron\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s birthday. Yours truly got to cook the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153meat blob\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that was served along with a wonderful platter of Mediterranean halibut. Ian, Kim\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s brother and his wife came down from Vancouver to partake in the festivities. I hadn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seen Ian in years so it was great to catch up with him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\">Below is a picture of Jennifer Wu, Kim and myself enjoying some of Jennifer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chinese dumplings. The three of us worked together at ZOOMIT. Jennifer was responsible for the directory synchronization and metadirectory engine and moved to Washington with the rest of us after the acquisition of ZOOMIT by Microsoft. She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s moved over to work on the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<a href=\"http:\/\/compnetworking.about.com\/b\/a\/039059.htm\" class=\"broken_link\"><font color=\"#546188\">Indigo<\/font><\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d team now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\">As usual the food was awesome, the wine was great and the company was exceptional.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/jackson.shaw\/KimSBirthdayParty\/photo#5105691783416781906\" class=\"broken_link\"><img src=\"http:\/\/lh4.google.com\/jackson.shaw\/RtsPoDswHFI\/AAAAAAAACbg\/FijI-mdClr0\/s144\/20070831_2720.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 60px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jacksonshaw.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/happy-birthday-kim.html\"><font color=\"#546188\">Jackson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Identity Management &amp; Active Directory Reality Tour Travelblog: Happy Birthday Kim!<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Something tells me Dave Kearns will find this mildly amusing, since when I first wrote about using a digital birthday, he said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px\">I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m just so much more trusting than you Canucks! Just another naive Yankee, willing to fork over his real birthday when someone asks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30px\">By the way, thanks for the pink gin, Kim (at least that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what it looks like) &#8211; but if it really wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t your birthday, I want the doughnut back!<\/p>\n<p>The reference was to a digital donut he had sent me to celebrate my digital birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, all I&#39;ll say is that my goal wasn&#39;t to prevent my friends from finding out my birthday &#8211; it was to prevent robots from using my birthday as a key for assembling information about me.\u00a0 So\u00a0even if\u00a0the robots read Jackson&#39;s blog (which I&#39;m sure the smarter ones do), and even if those robots can decode roman numerals inscribed in icing (which is probably not very common), my identity record at Facebook will still\u00a0not join through trivial automated processes\u00a0to\u00a0my records on other internet\u00a0repositories, and this gives me some (very small) pleasure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Attention Robots.
