{"id":829,"date":"2007-07-03T20:59:29","date_gmt":"2007-07-04T04:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=829"},"modified":"2007-07-03T21:05:25","modified_gmt":"2007-07-04T05:05:25","slug":"cardspace-and-smart-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=829","title":{"rendered":"CardSpace and Smart Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the next few days&nbsp;I will write about&nbsp;some of the Information Card ideas and products I saw at the Burton Group&#39;s Catalyst Conference.&nbsp; The Interopathon demonstrated a whole slew of identity provider, identity selector and relying party products&nbsp;written by all kinds of competitors and collaborators.&nbsp; Pretty much all the&nbsp;big software&nbsp;companies were involved, as were a some smart&nbsp;identity industry startups.&nbsp;&nbsp;The next day,&nbsp;the party continued in&nbsp;the Microsoft hospitality suite &#8211; and probably other suites as well.<\/p>\n<p>One of&nbsp;my favorite demonstrations was put together by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gemalto.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Gemalto<\/a>, one of the world&#39;s largest manufacturers of smart cards, cell phone SIMS and dongles.&nbsp; They&nbsp;collaborated closely&nbsp;with the CardSpace team on a prototype of CardSpace in which Information Cards and the associated metadata and secret keys are all kept on a smartcard or dongle.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#39;s the user experience:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You arrive at a machine, and insert your smart card.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CardSpace asks for a password, and when you enter it, you see your CardSpace cards as usual &#8211; except they marterialize from the smart card.&nbsp; The system supports both self-issued and managed cards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then, when you remove your smart card, all the CardSpace cards go away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, the system completely solves the roaming and &#8220;kiosk&#8221; problem.&nbsp; You take your Information Cards with you, and use them wherever you go.&nbsp; A single smart card can transport a whole set of unrelated cards &#8211; the &#8220;Fist full of dongles&#8221; problem is solved.<\/p>\n<p>The Gemalto folks have a demo that makes the ideas completely clear&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/soapbox.msn.com\/video.aspx?vid=67781da3-3590-4d36-ae4a-b70f49982b4a\" class=\"broken_link\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Much of the work was done by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dotnetcard.com\/Blogs\/ksachdeva\/default.aspx\">Kapil <\/a>&#8211; great guy&nbsp; and I&nbsp;have my fingers crossed that he&#39;ll start blogging again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Take a look at the great ideas for CardSpace roaming shown in this little video<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[8,44,4],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/829"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/68"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=829"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/829\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=829"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=829"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=829"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
