{"id":723,"date":"2007-03-25T10:57:04","date_gmt":"2007-03-25T18:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=723"},"modified":"2007-03-25T12:30:12","modified_gmt":"2007-03-25T20:30:12","slug":"cruise-control-versus-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=723","title":{"rendered":"Cruise control and alcohol&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a new <a href=\"\/?p=720#comments\">comment<\/a>, Ernst Lopez Cordozo&nbsp;book-ends&nbsp;our &#8220;transducer versus delegation&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"\/?p=720#comment-3430\">discussion <\/a>with a spectacular&nbsp;real-life example.<\/p>\n<p>I had been trying to tease apart the distinction between a transducer and an agent to which we have delegated, arguing that we need both classes of component in computerized systems.&nbsp; Using the &#8220;gas pedal&#8221; as an example, I wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m certain that Ernst would not argue that we \u00e2\u20ac\u0153delegate\u00e2\u20ac\u009d control of acceleration to the foot pedal in our car \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153foot-pedal-associated-components\u00e2\u20ac\u009d constitute the transducer that conveys our intentions to engine control systems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ernst&#39;s response&nbsp;puts the&nbsp;whole discussion&nbsp;into stark relief:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I agree with your analysis. And yes, it is difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago the car of a well known Dutch opera singer caused a fatal accident while driving on the parking deck of the Amsterdam Arena.
