{"id":225,"date":"2005-02-14T08:08:59","date_gmt":"2005-02-14T08:08:59","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=225"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"i-wish-all-taxonomies-were-this-amusing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=225","title":{"rendered":"I Wish All Taxonomies Were This Amusing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Ceppi has <a href=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/arbitrage\/2005\/02\/planes_trains_a.html\" class=\"broken_link\">picked up and extended<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idcorner.org\/index.php?p=11\" class=\"broken_link\">an interesting piece by Stefan Brands<\/a> where he uses a <strong>transportation analogy<\/strong> to classify personal digital identity systems such as FOAF and LID as bicycles whereas SAML and Liberty are jet planes.  Chris goes on to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=ltr style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/uni.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img title=Uni style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px; WIDTH: 41px; HEIGHT: 70px\" alt=Uni src=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/arbitrage\/images\/uni.jpg\" border=0><\/a>Under this taxonomy, I see LID as a unicycle &#8211; novel, but impractical and limited to people with a very specialized set of skills. As has been dissected  in numerous other <a href=\"http:\/\/\/\">places<\/a> (most expertly at <a href=\"http:\/\/weblog.burningbird.net\/archives\/2005\/01\/10\/your-digital-self\/\">Burningbird<\/a>), LID&#39;s dependence on URLs as an identifier misses the mark in a number of ways &#8211; like a unicycle, LID is just not a useful way to get around.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/ces.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img title=Ces style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px; WIDTH: 52px; HEIGHT: 44px\" alt=Ces src=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/arbitrage\/images\/ces.jpg\" border=0><\/a>SXIP would then be a Cessna &#8211; complex enough (with its hosted identities and 3rd party assertions) that you need a pilots license to use it,  but not rigorous enough for a broad set of air travel requirements (e.g. SXIP is not based on standards).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/photos\/uncategorized\/shuttle.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img title=Shuttle style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px; WIDTH: 52px; HEIGHT: 63px\" alt=Shuttle src=\"http:\/\/ceppi.blogs.com\/arbitrage\/images\/shuttle.jpg\" border=0><\/a>SAML and Liberty as they have currently been implemented might be considered the space shuttles of identity. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/p>\n<p>I&#39;m not sure I buy this taxonomy &#8211; I think several of the systems have a lot to offer &#8211; but it is really amusing.
