{"id":206,"date":"2005-03-11T08:58:24","date_gmt":"2005-03-11T08:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=206"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"an-irrefutable-argument","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=206","title":{"rendered":"An irrefutable argument"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scott Cantor from Ohio State University posted this comment to my recent piece on claims:<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=ltr style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p>The question of whether a SAML assertion should have been named a claim has come up before, and I always felt the real problem was that the likely pronunciation of SCML doesn&#39;t suggest confidence in the speaker. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=ltr>Now who can argue with this?<\/p>\n<p dir=ltr>Scott is a great engineer and is not only the architect of <a href=\"http:\/\/shibboleth.internet2.edu\/about-shibboleth.html\" class=\"broken_link\">Shibboleth<\/a> (which is a very forward thinking system I want to write about going forward) but also one of the main editors of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasis-open.org\/committees\/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=security#samlv20\"> SAML 2.0 spec<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p dir=ltr>Anyway, I want everyone to know that my use of the word claim is NOT an attack on SAML&#39;s name or documents.  I myself, having long worked with X.500 and LDAP, used the words &#8220;Attribute Value Assertion&#8221; for many years and don&#39;t intend to write any letters of apology about it.  It&#39;s just that I now think a word meaning &#8220;an assertion about which there is doubt&#8221; goes right to the center of issues I hope everyone will think about.
