(AP) \u2014 State lawmakers have given final approval to a bill prohibiting universities and colleges in Delaware from requiring that students or applicants for enrollment provide their social networking login information.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, which unanimously passed the Senate shortly after midnight Saturday, also prohibits schools and universities from requesting that a student or applicant log onto a social networking site so that school officials can access the site profile or account.<\/p>\n<p>The bill includes exemptions for investigations by police agencies or a school&#39;s public safety department if criminal activity is suspected.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers approved the bill after deleting an amendment that expanded the scope of its privacy protections to elementary and secondary school students.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First of all there was the realization that if lawmakers had to\u00a0draft\u00a0this law\u00a0it meant universities and colleges were already strong-arming students into giving up their social networking credentials.\u00a0\u00a0This descent into hell knocked my breath away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0I\u00a0groped\u00a0my way back from the burning sulfur\u00a0since the new bill seemed to show a modicum of common sense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Until finally we learn that\u00a0younger children\u00a0won&#39;t be\u00a0afforded the same protections&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Can teachers and principals\u00a0actually bully youngsters\u00a0to log in to\u00a0Facebook\u00a0and access their accounts?\u00a0\u00a0Can they\u00a0make\u00a0kids hand over their passwords?\u00a0 What are we teaching our young people about their identity?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vjrNbtLCRIM\"><em>Why oh why oh why oh?<\/em>\u00a0<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College students and applicants are no longer required to provide their social networking login information&#8230; But what about young children?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[6,17,11],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1221"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/68"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1221"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1221\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1221"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1221"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1221"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
