{"id":1183,"date":"2011-04-02T11:02:57","date_gmt":"2011-04-02T19:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1183"},"modified":"2011-04-04T12:25:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-04T20:25:36","slug":"google-indoors-featured-on-german-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=1183","title":{"rendered":"<em>Google Indoors<\/em> featured on German TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germans woke up yesterday to a\u00a0headline story on\u00a0Das Erste&#39;s\u00a0TV Morning Show\u00a0announcing a\u00a0spiffy new Internet service &#8211; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/mediathek.daserste.de\/sendungen_a-z\/435054_morgenmagazin\/6849806_-google-indoors---bald-klopfen-sie-auch-an-ihrer-t-?buch\">Google\u00a0indoors<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2011\/03\/google_indoors_0.jpg\" alt=\"The first&#39;s lead-in and Google Indoors spokesman\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A spokesman said Google was extending its Street View offering\u00a0so Internet users\u00a0could finally see inside\u00a0peoples&#8217; homes.\u00a0 Indeed,\u00a0<em>Google indoors<\/em> personnel were\u00a0already knocking on doors, patiently explaining that\u00a0if\u00a0people\u00a0had not already gone through\u00a0the opt-out process,\u00a0they had\u00a0&#8220;opted in&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2011\/03\/google_indoors_1.jpg\" alt=\"Google Indoors greeted by happy customer\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; so the technicians needed to get on with their work:<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2011\/03\/google_indoors_2.jpg\" alt=\"Google Indoors camera-head enters appartment\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Google&#39;s deep concern about peoples&#8217; privacy had let it to introduce features such as automated blurring of faces&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2011\/03\/google_indoors_4.jpg\" alt=\"Automated privacy features and product placements with revenue shared with residents\" \/><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8230; and the business model of the scheme was devilishly simple: the contents of peoples&#8217; houses served as product placements charged to advertisers, with 1\/10 of a cent per automatically recognized brand name going to the residents themselves.\u00a0 As shown below, people can choose to obfuscate products worth more than 5,000 Euros\u00a0if concerned about\u00a0attracting thieves &#8211; an example of the\u00a0advanced privacy options and levels the service makes possible.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2011\/03\/google_indoors_3.jpg\" alt=\"Google Indoors app experience\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/mediathek.daserste.de\/sendungen_a-z\/435054_morgenmagazin\/6849806_-google-indoors---bald-klopfen-sie-auch-an-ihrer-t-?buch\">the video<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Navigation features within houses are amazing!\u00a0 From the amount of effort and wit put into it by a major TV show, I&#39;d wager that\u00a0even if Google&#39;s troubles with Germany\u00a0around Street View are over, its problems with Germans around privacy may not be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Frankly,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daserste.de\/\">Das Erste<\/a>\u00a0(meaning &#8220;The First&#8221;) has to be congratulated on one of the best crafted April Fools you will have witnessed.\u00a0\u00a0I don&#39;t have the command of German language or politics (!) to understand all the subtleties, but friends say the piece\u00a0is teeming with irony.\u00a0 And given <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.fr\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CBgQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.telegraph.co.uk%2Ftechnology%2Fshanerichmond%2F100005766%2Feric-schmidt-getting-close-to-the-creepy-line%2F&amp;ei=tECYTbrcAY-bhQeettzfCA&amp;usg=AFQjCNHyPJPESZWevuPrvcBLNffDxFbo8A\">Eric Schmidt&#39;s policy <\/a>of getting as close to &#8220;creepy&#8221; as possible,\u00a0who wouldn&#39;t find the\u00a0video\u00a0at least <a href=\"http:\/\/news.slashdot.org\/story\/09\/09\/30\/2052258\/Google-Wants-to-Map-Indoors-Too\">partly\u00a0believable<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>[Thanks to Kai Rannenberg for the heads up.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Check it out!
