{"id":1174,"date":"2011-03-20T09:39:14","date_gmt":"2011-03-20T17:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1174"},"modified":"2011-03-20T09:47:26","modified_gmt":"2011-03-20T17:47:26","slug":"the-voting-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=1174","title":{"rendered":"The voting so far"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The people working on a<a href=\"http:\/\/technolog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2011\/03\/12\/6250690-sxsw-vote-on-your-social-network-users-bill-of-rights\" class=\"broken_link\">\u00a0Social Network Users&#8217; Bill of Rights <\/a>have done another interesting eThing:\u00a0 rather than requiring people to express support or rejection\u00a0holus-bolus they&#39;ve\u00a0decided to let us\u00a0vote on the individual rights proposed.\u00a0 Further, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?page_id=191\">Jon Pincus<\/a> has shared the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2615\">\u00a0early results <\/a>on his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/\">Liminal States <\/a>blog.\u00a0 He writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2606\"><span style=\"color: #546188;\">SXSW panel<\/span><\/a> got a decent amount of attention, including article by Helen A. S. Popkin\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/technolog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2011\/03\/12\/6250690-sxsw-vote-on-your-social-network-users-bill-of-rights\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #546188;\">Vote on your \u2018Social Network Users\u2019 Bill of Rights\u2019<\/span><\/a> on MSNBC\u2019s <em>Technolog<\/em>, Kim Cameron\u2019s post <a href=\"\/?p=1172\"><span style=\"color: #546188;\">on the <em>Identity Weblog<\/em><\/span><\/a>, and a brief link from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/222288\/web_companies_should_practice_data_stewardship.html\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #546188;\">Mark Sullivan of <em>PC World<\/em><\/span><\/a>. Here\u2019s the voting so far<\/p>\n<ol style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li><em>41 yes 0 no<\/em> Honesty: Honor your privacy policy and terms of service<\/li>\n<li><em>41 yes 0 no<\/em> Clarity: Make sure that policies, terms of service, and settings are easy to find and understand<\/li>\n<li><em>41 yes 0 no<\/em> Freedom of speech: Do not delete or modify my data without a clear policy and justification<\/li>\n<li><em>33 yes 4 no<\/em> Empowerment : Support assistive technologies and universal accessibility<\/li>\n<li><em>35 yes 2 no<\/em> Self-protection: Support privacy-enhancing technologies<\/li>\n<li><em>37 yes 3 no<\/em> Data minimization: Minimize the information I am required to provide and share with others<\/li>\n<li><em>39 yes 1 no<\/em> Control: Let me control my data, and don\u2019t facilitate sharing it unless I agree first<\/li>\n<li><em>39 yes 1 no<\/em> Predictability: Obtain my prior consent before significantly changing who can see my data.<\/li>\n<li><em>38 yes 0 no<\/em> Data portability: Make it easy for me to obtain a copy of my data<\/li>\n<li><em>39 yes 0 no<\/em> Protection: Treat my data as securely as your own confidential data unless I choose to share it, and notify me if it is compromised<\/li>\n<li><em>36 yes 2 no<\/em> Right to know: Show me how you are using my data and allow me to see who and what has access to it.<\/li>\n<li><em>24 yes 13 no<\/em> Right to self-define: Let me create more than one identity and use pseudonyms. Do not link them without my permission.<\/li>\n<li><em>35 yes 1 no<\/em> Right to appeal: Allow me to appeal punitive actions<\/li>\n<li><em>37 yes 1 no<\/em> Right to withdraw: Allow me to delete my account, and remove my data<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So it\u2019s in general overwhelmingly positive: five rights are unanimous, and another eight at 89% or higher.\u00a0 The one exception: the right to self-define, currently at about 65%.\u00a0 As I said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talesfromthe.net\/jon\/?p=2596#comment-135798\"><span style=\"color: #546188;\">in a comment<\/span><\/a> on the earlier thread, this right is vital for people like whistleblowers, domestic violence victims, political dissidents, closeted LGBTQs.\u00a0\u00a0 I wonder whether the large minority of people who don\u2019t think it matters are thinking about it from those perspectives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The voting continues at <a href=\"http:\/\/snubillofrights.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"color: #546188;\">http:\/\/SNUBillOfRights.com<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Please voice your opinion!<\/p>\n<p>The voting on individual rights is still light.\u00a0 Right 12 clearly stands out as one which needs discussion.<\/p>\n<p>I expect most people just take a quick look at the bill as a whole, say &#8220;Yeah, that makes sense&#8221; and move on.\u00a0\u00a0The &#8220;pro&#8221; and &#8220;against&#8221; pages at facebook ran about 500 to 1 in favor\u00a0of the Bill when I looked a few days ago.\u00a0 In this sense the Bill is certainly right on track.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the individual rights need to be examined\u00a0very carefully by at least some of us.\u00a0 I&#39;ll return to Jon&#39;s comments on right 12 when I can make some time to set out my ideas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Facebook the voting runs about 500 to 1 in favor of the Bill.
