{"id":1101,"date":"2010-05-28T02:17:50","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T10:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2010-06-19T23:27:03","modified_gmt":"2010-06-20T07:27:03","slug":"epic-on-google-wifi-eavesdropping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=1101","title":{"rendered":"EPIC on Google WiFi eavesdropping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img class=\"alignright\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2010\/05\/streetview1.png\" alt=\"\" \/>Readers have drawn our attention to\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/epic.org\/privacy\/cloudcomputing\/google\/EPIC_StreetView_FCC_Letter_05_21_10.pdf\">recent letter\u00a0from\u00a0EPIC&#39;s Marc Rotenberg\u00a0<\/a>to\u00a0 FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski.<\/p>\n<p>In the detailed letter, Marc Rotenberg\u00a0specifically calls attention to the mapping of private device identifiers, saying, &#8220;We understand that Google also downloaded and recorded a unique device ID, the MAC address, for wireless access devices as well as the SSID assigned by users.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He argues:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The capture of Wi-Fi data in this manner by Google Street View could easily constitute a violation of Title III of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, also known as the Wiretap Act, as amended by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) of 1986 to include electronic communications.
