{"id":1071,"date":"2009-11-21T10:45:02","date_gmt":"2009-11-21T18:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1071"},"modified":"2009-11-22T12:45:41","modified_gmt":"2009-11-22T20:45:41","slug":"identity-roadmap-presentation-at-pdc09","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=1071","title":{"rendered":"Identity Roadmap Presentation at PDC09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week I presented the Identity Keynote at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in LA.\u00a0\u00a0The slide deck is <a href=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2009\/11\/SVC10.pptx\" class=\"broken_link\">here<\/a>, and the video is <a href=\"http:\/\/ecn.channel9.msdn.com\/o9\/pdc09\/wmv\/SVC10.wmv\" class=\"broken_link\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After announcing\u00a0the\u00a0release of the Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) as an Extension to .NET, I brought\u00a0forward three architect\/engineers to discuss how claims had helped them solve\u00a0their\u00a0development problems.\u00a0\u00a0 I chose these\u00a0particular guests\u00a0because I\u00a0wanted the developer audience to be able to\u00a0benefit from the\u00a0insights\u00a0they had previously shared with me about\u00a0the advantages &#8211; and challenges &#8211;\u00a0of adopting the claims based model.\u00a0 Each\u00a0guest talks about the approach\u00a0he took and the lessons learned.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Bybee, Principal Program Manager from Microsoft Dynamics CRM,\u00a0talked about\u00a0the role of identity in delivering the &#8220;the Power of Choice&#8221; &#8211; the ability for his customers to run his software wherever they want, on premises or in the cloud or in combination, and to offer access to anyone they choose.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"\/wp-content\/images\/2009\/11\/SVC10.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Venky Veeraraghavan, the Program Manager in charge of identity for SharePoint, talks about what it was like to completely rethink the way identity works in Sharepoint so it takes advantage of the claims based architecture to solve problems that previously had been impossibly difficult.\u00a0 He explores the problems of\u00a0&#8220;Multi-hop&#8221; systems and web farms,\u00a0especially the &#8220;Dreaded Second Hop&#8221; &#8211; which he admits &#8220;really, really scares us&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 I find his explanation riveting and think any developer of large scale systems will agree.<\/p>\n<p>Dmitry Sotnikov, who is Manager of New Product Research at Quest Software,\u00a0presents a remarkable Azure-based version of a\u00a0product Quest has previously offered only &#8220;on premise&#8221;.\u00a0 The service is\u00a0a backup system for Active Directory, and involved solving a whole set of hard\u00a0identity problems\u00a0involving devices and data as well as people.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the presentation,\u00a0while discussing future directions, I\u00a0announce the Community\u00a0Technical Preview\u00a0of our new work on REST-based authorization (a profile of OAuth), and then show the prototype of the mutli-protocol identity selector\u00a0Mike\u00a0Jones unveiled at the recent IIW.\u00a0\u00a0 And finally, I talk for the first time about &#8220;System.Identity&#8221;,\u00a0work\u00a0on user-centric next generation directory that I wanted to take to the community for feedback.\u00a0 I&#39;ll be blogging about this a lot and hopefully others from the blogosphere will find time to discuss it with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Each guest talks about the approach he took and the lessons learned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":68,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[12,37,43,6,10,8,5],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1071"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/68"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1071"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1071\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1071"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1071"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1071"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
