{"id":1038,"date":"2009-05-14T09:21:31","date_gmt":"2009-05-14T17:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2009-05-14T10:32:03","modified_gmt":"2009-05-14T18:32:03","slug":"real-business-on-geneva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.identityblog.com\/?p=1038","title":{"rendered":"Real business on Geneva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"first\">Network World writer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/Home\/jfontana.html\" class=\"broken_link\">John Fontana<\/a> has\u00a0turned his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/twitter.com\/johnfontana\" class=\"broken_link\">tweet volume <\/a>up to\u00a0MAX this week covering TechEd.\u00a0 I think it works &#8211; I&#39;m enjoying it &#8211;\u00a0though\u00a0the sheer volume\u00a0of Fontana Tweet makes it pretty hard to\u00a0get\u00a0your usual\u00a0bird&#39;s-eye view of\u00a0who\u00a0is\u00a0eating donuts, listening to new\u00a0bands and staying up till all hours (can I live without that?).\u00a0\u00a0 John also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/news\/2009\/051309-microsoft-geneva.html?page=1\" class=\"broken_link\">posted\u00a0a news piece<\/a>\u00a0announcing that\u00a0Microsoft IT has turned on\u00a0Geneva for widespread\u00a0production use internally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"first\">Funny, last week I was at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.id-conf.com\/events\/eic2009\/agenda\">Kuppinger Cole European ID Conference<\/a> in Munich (more soon).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/vquill.com\/\">Dave Kearns\u00a0<\/a>(one of John&#39;s colleagues at Network World) hosted a panel\u00a0where he\u00a0asked\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/vbertocci\/\">Vittorio <\/a>and\u00a0me\u00a0whether Microsoft was actually using the Geneva technology.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"first\">I waved my arms pathetically and explained that our IT department had strict procedures\u00a0establishing the point\u00a0in the ship cycle\u00a0where they will do\u00a0production deployments.\u00a0\u00a0Well, now Beta 2 is out the door and\u00a0it&#39;s great that\u00a0our IT has sufficient confidence to move immediately towards\u00a0widespread internal usage.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"first\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;LOS ANGELES \u2013 Two days after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/news\/2009\/051209-microsoft-geneva.html?hpg1=bn\" class=\"broken_link\">shipping the second beta<\/a> of its newest identity platform, Microsoft&#39;s internal IT department is rolling out the software <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/news\/2009\/051109-microsoft-vista-testers.html?ts0hb&amp;story=msteched\" class=\"broken_link\">corporate wide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;Geneva, Microsoft&#39;s identity platform for the cloud, will support 59 identity applications that Microsoft maintains with 29 business partners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;The federated applications include a payroll services and an online company store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;The company&#39;s IT department will change DNS records today on its internal network so all its identity federations are handled through its Geneva server environment rather than the current five Active Directory Federation Servers (ADFS) the company runs, according to Brian Puhl, a technology architect for Microsoft IT.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;Microsoft has nearly 410,000 computers and 165,000 users on its network.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;Puhl laid out the plan Tuesday during a session at Microsoft&#39;s annual TechEd conference. He said the cut over initially moves the company from ADFS 1.0 to ADFS 2.0 in Geneva, but that over time Microsoft will take advantage of streamlined support for its Live ID technology, incorporate CardSpace-based identity and roll-out claims-aware applications that are in development at Microsoft.
